DARK RUM BY MALIN + GOETZ – A FRAGRANCE REVIEW

Malin and Goetz Dark Rum Perfume Bottle and Box

Hey, Everyone!  Looking for an intoxicating unisex scent that easy to wear?  Then look no further.  Today we are going to be reviewing Dark Rum EDT by Malin + Goetz.

Malin + Goetz is a modern-day apothecary out of New York.  Dark Rum is their most beloved fragrance.  It was released in 2016, and composed by perfumer Claude Dir.  It is their signature, best-selling scent and is a modern interpretation of traditional bay rum.  It comes in an Eau de Toilette perfume spray, Eau de Parfum, a perfume oil, a lotion, and a body wash.  I purchased mine from ScentBird.  A fragrance subscription service that sends you a 30 day supply of the perfume of your choosing every month for only $14.95 per month.  Click the link if you are interested in checking them out.

Dark Rum Notes

  • Dark Rum has top notes of – bergamot, plum, and anise
  • Heart Notes of – leather, rum, and vanilla
  • And base notes of – patchouli, amber, and milk

Dark Rum is a boozy fragrance of the aromatic and fruity family.  And to me, it is a sexy, effortless, and fun fragrance to wear.

It’s super addicting, and I can’t stop smelling it when I’m wearing.

It is surprisingly light and soapy for a fragrance with a name like Dark Rum.  Because when I think of “dark rum” I imagine a scent that is very intense and mysterious, but Dark Rum by Malin and Goetz is playful open.

It reminds me of sipping champagne in a relaxing bubble bath for some reason.

It opens up very clean and fresh and you can definitely smell the fruity plum note at the top.  After about 45 min it starts to warm up and you get hints of the rum, leather, and vanilla.  And after about 2 hours it starts to dry down to more of a creamy amber topped with that same plum that lingers for the life of the fragrance.

Who Is Dark Rum For?

Dark Rum is a unisex scent and it’s for someone who likes to smell clean and put together without taking themselves too seriously.  It lasts for about 6 hours, the sillage is low to moderate, it has a moderate projection but as it evolves it begins to wear close to the skin.  It is not super concentrated so you don’t have to worry about over spraying and having the scent punch you in the face.

It is extremely versatile, and it can be worn in any season day or night.  I think this would make a great work scent because of the lightness of the plum rounded out by the warm intoxicating quality of the leather and creamy amber.

Ok, so a funny story.

The first time I wore this my husband noticed it immediately.  So, that was a good and bad sign.  A good sign because he liked it, but a bad sign because I was trying to hide the fact that bought another perfume lol.  And for some reason, he didn’t let up.  So, I had to break down and tell him what it was.  When I showed him the bottle he called it my “spy” perfume because mind came in ScentBird’s cool “secret agent” packaging.

Dark Rum Packaging

Dark Rum comes packaged in a clean white box with silver sans serif font.  The bottle is an elegant 3.4 oz cylindrical unassuming clear bottle, mustard writing, and a silver cap.  Because I purchased my through ScentBird I can’t comment on the sprayer.

As for my bottle, it came in a black velvet pouch with the ScentBird logo.  The perfume was housed in a white metal case shaped like a tube of lipstick.  When you twist at the midpoint of the case a large silver spray pops up.  At this point, you can spray the product or you can pull the product out to reveal a tasteful .3oz glass tube with a black label identifying the name of the perfume and its house.  You can spray the perfume this was as well.

As for this sprayer, must say that I love it!  The product comes in a nice healthy spray.  It is an evenly dispersed mist that won’t damage your clothes and covers a nice surface area of the body.  It doesn’t come out in a weird stream which is always a plus.

Dark Rum EDP retails for $165 USD for a 3.4oz bottle on the Malin + Goetz website.  The EDT is not listed and I can’t locate it for a reasonable price (it’s like $200 USD on eBay).  So, I suggest you pick it up on their website if you want the full bottle.

Or if you are interested in just giving it a try you can take it for a test run by signing up for a ScentBird subscriptionIt’s only $14.95 per month, and so far I’m loving mine.

If you’ve tried Dark Rum by Malin + Goetz let me know your thoughts.

And next month I’ll be receiving Cannabis Santal also by Malin + Goetz, so I will share my thoughts on that one with you as well.

Until next time! 🙂
