clothes handing in store

You look smashing! And to top it off you decide to break out your new $300 Eau de Parfum. Your day is going by without a hitch. But it’s 8 pm and you haven’t received one single fragrance compliment!

What went wrong?

Sorry to break it to you, but the problem could be your clothes. Think of it this way, it’s just like when you buy a new car. A year passes, and the next thing you know it smells like French Fries.

No Bueno. 🙁

Well, when your clothes are stashed away in your closet for long periods of time they can start smelling old and musty.  Yes, even after you wash them.

But there is a solution.  Linen sprays.

WHAT IS LINEN SPRAY?

Linen spray is a fabric refresher that is dispersed as a light mist. It is often made out of alcohol and aromatic oils. They can be formulated with all natural essential oils, or include synthetic fragrance notes. If you do go the synthetic route at least make sure it phthalate free.

Linen sprays are extremely versatile and can be spritzed over bedding, linens, carpet, and clothing. Today, I’m going to teach you how to make and your very own all natural essential oil linen spray. So, you can give your clothes a lovely refresh between washings.

BENEFITS OF USING ALL NATURAL LINEN SPRAY

Saves Money – You can make your own DIY linen spray for a fraction of what it costs to buy.

Better For Your Health – Most fabric refreshers from the grocery store are loaded with chemicals, toxins, and artificial fragrances. But when you make your own you can be confident that your family is safe from these dangerous toxins.

Kills Harmful Bacteria – Essential oils don’t just mask unpleasant odors. But thanks to their antimicrobial properties essential oils combat the bacteria that cause unpleasant odors in the first place.

You’re In Control – You the exact scent and therapeutic benefits you want when you want it. When you make your own linen spray, it’s easy to customize a blend to exactly the way you want it. Fresh, spicy, soothing, citrusy or grounding you name it.

Won’t Clash With Your Fragrance of the Day – Essential oils react with the air and don’t last as long as synthetic fragrances.  So you get the freshening + odor killing properties of essential oils without overpowering your main fragrance of the day.

SUPER SIMPLE ESSENTIAL OIL LINEN SPRAY RECIPE

To make your very own linen spray you will need the following:

Tools

  • Spray bottle (preferably glass as essential oils can eat through plastic)
  • Small Funnel

Ingredients

Surprise – you only need 2 ingredients!

  1. Alcohol or witch hazel (rubbing alcohol, vodka, or perfumer’s alcohol will all work)
  2. Essential oil

Instructions

  1. Combine the essential oils in the spray bottle, and give it a good swirl to give the oils a chance to mingle. Let sit for 15 minutes then swirl again.
  2. Add alcohol until almost full, leaving about ½ inch of space at the top.
  3. Cap the bottle and shake to combine.

Yes, it’s that easy.

WHY USE ALCOHOL OR WITCH HAZEL INSTEAD OF WATER?

Many DIY linen sprays use water. Why doesn’t this one?

Water takes longer to evaporate than alcohol. That means your fabrics dry faster. And that’s much better for your fabrics because moisture is not your fabrics friend. Your fabrics need to dry quickly so they don’t mold and mildew.

Remember that time you left your clothes in the washing machine too long without putting them in the dryer? Yeah, lesson learned. Keep your fabrics dry.

Also as a bonus, linen sprays made with alcohol will last for months without needing to be refrigerated. That’s a plus in my book.

  2. I was looking for DIY perfume ideas and came across your post. Been wondering about using essential oils but didn’t know how to mix them so thanks for the helpful instructions.

Question – how long can the spray last before it loses its efficacy? I am guessing that I’ll probably just use once a day. Thanks for the tips again.

    1. Hi Cathy,

An average essential oil fragrance should last you anywhere between 2-5 hours.

The lasting power of your fragrance depends on the oils you use, and the ratio between “perfume” and your “carrier” of choice.  For example, if you use a blend of oils that contains only “top notes” like lemon or bergamot they will have the shortest life span (approximately 30 min- 1 hour).

However, if your blend includes bottom notes like frankincense and sandalwood then your fragrance will last longer.  Moreover, because essential oils are natural, they interact more easily with the environment.  This results in a shorter scent life than synthetic fragrances that are on the market.

Additionally, the more concentrated your fragrance the more long lasting it will be (think eau de toilette vs eau de parfum).

      Hope this helps! 🙂
